Plant Care

Each plant is different. Even though the same plant requires the same care, in your home, your environment, your plant will tell you what it needs. Topiaries for the most part require a lot of light. They don’t want to be scorched in the direct sun for 8-10 hours. They do love sun, set back in a window for 4-6 hours. They like water, you’ll need a dish under them. But you may also find lifting them off the surface once a week or more onto a wire rack of some sort to give them air “down there” really helps. . Every other day I put each topiary in a stream of water(soaking the soil only) not drenching. I put them on a cookie sheet with a raised wire rack in the sun. Once a topiary dries out, it is virtually impossible to bring them back. They are very special, very spoiled (in a good way) babies. It takes about a year to grow and create one topiary.

Anytime we bring in a new plant I will post care instructions here. You are always welcome to email text or call for help.

General Info

Most houseplants are the same, they’ll tell you what they need. Brown leaves-not enough water. Yellow leaves- too much water. The surface of the soil is not an indicator of how dry a plant is or whether it needs a drink. 2” into the soil is the best way to tell if they’re thirsty.

Tahitian Bridal Veil

Tahitian Bridal Veil like dry soil, cactus soil mixed with regular potting soil, 2 parts cactus, 1 part regular. They like the warmth but not direct sun. Dappled light is best. The flowers close up at night sometimes they’ll look dead. They’re not. Watering: very careful not to over-water a Bridal Veil Plant. If you keep the soil of a Bridal Veil Plant too wet, the roots will rot and the plant dies. The best way to water a bridal veil Plant is to wait until the plant is almost completely dry and then water well until the water comes out the bottom drip holes.

Streptocarpella

The Streptocarpella likes to watered well once a week and likes to sit back about 3-5’ from a window where there is direct light but won’t hit the plant. Streptocarpella should be grown in a well drained, organic potting mix in either a hanging basket, window box or decorative container. While not a heavy feeder, it should be fertilized periodically to keep it growing and flowering. It is best situated in a bright location where it gets good light but not direct sun. Like all gesneriads it should have uniformly moist conditions. This plant not only will perform well on the patio or porch during the summer months, it will continue to bloom all winter long as a houseplant. In the winter give it an east or south window to assure it gets enough light to continue blooming. It is easy to propagate by terminal cuttings.

Aloe

loves the sun at least 8 hours of direct sun. Whether indoors or out, they need sun. And they only need water once every 10-14 days. Maybe even 3 weeks. Again, they’ll tell you. Just don’t put them outside too early in the spring. Wait until weather at night is consistently above 60. They’re so beautiful and ginormous in the right place.
